William (Bill) Mack

July 18, 1966 — July 18, 2025

William (Bill) Kooyan Mack of Bonney Lake, Washington passed away peacefully in the early hours of his 59th birthday on July 18, 2025 surrounded by the loving embrace of his family after a hard fought battle with Metastatic Cholangiocarcinoma.

Bill was born in Seoul, Korea on July 18, 1966 before being adopted at the age of three by Prlé and Mary Ann Mack. He was a perfect fit to the Mack family, joining siblings Renee, Michelle and Gary to live out his early years in Anchorage, Alaska before eventually settling on Vashon Island where he commuted off island to attend Charles Wright Academy. He later completed his Bachelor of Science degree in fire science from Columbia Southern University.

In 1990, while playing volleyball at Greenlake, he met the love of his life - Jane Elliott. Jane and Bill had a whirlwind romance that led to marriage on March 23, 1991. They went on to have three sons - Taylor, Joe and Christian.

As his blossoming young family grew, Bill began his fire service career with the City of Auburn Fire Department in 1992. He rose through the ranks at Valley Regional Fire Authority serving in many key leadership roles eventually becoming a Battalion Chief.

Throughout his career, he was a champion for training and development, teaching CPR and EMT skills, leading multi-agency regional training efforts, and helping shape the careers of countless firefighters and officers across King and Pierce counties. Bill also served as Vice President of IAFF Local 1352, District Representative for the Washington State Council of Fire Fighters, and a strong advocate for firefighter health, safety, and labor rights.

In 2021, he brought his experience and passion for mentorship to East Pierce Fire & Rescue as Deputy Chief, where he continued to make a lasting impact until his retirement in 2023.

Bill’s deep love for people shined through his actions- from coaching or cheering on the sidelines of countless youth, high school and college sporting events, to showing up for fellow fire fighter families in crisis - to know Bill was to be loved by Bill. His infectious laugh and warm smile always brought everyone together.

His life and legacy is survived by all those who knew him, particularly his beloved family - his Wife, Jane, three sons, Taylor (Sarah), Joe (Kylee), Christian (McKenzie), and two grandchildren, Cooper and Addison; as well as his sister, Renee (Raymond). He is preceded in death by his father, Prle’ W. Mack Jr., mother, Mary Ann Mack, brother, sister, Michelle Mack and brother, Gary Mack.

A service to honor the life and sacrifice of Bill will be held on Saturday, August 9th at the Christian Faith Center, located: 33645 20th Ave. S in Federal Way. It is recommended attendees arrive and park at 11:30 am to avoid congestion, as the procession will arrive at 11:55am, with the service to follow at 1:00 pm.
