Mary "Margie" Smith

Mary “Margie” Smith, passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 8th, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, and husband of 66 years Monte Smith.

Margie was born on January 27, 1938, in Puyallup Washington to the late Bert and Lena Shoemaker, their 9th of 11 children. Growing up in Edgewood WA, she worked the bulb farms, picked berries, and babysat young family members. She graduated from Sumner High School in 1956, became a bookkeeper at a bank in downtown Tacoma, and married the love of her life childhood/high school sweetheart, Monte Smith, at Saint Martin of Tours in Fife WA, September 04, 1959. She then joined him in Ellensburg, working at a bank there, until he graduated from College. Once back on this side of the mountains, she returned to the bank in Tacoma, as head bookkeeper, until almost ready to give birth to Tim, the first of her and Monte’s five children.

Always a hard worker, Margie was not only kind, and loving to all, but a devoted wife and mother, was an amazing cook, nurse, teacher, seamstress, taxi, and pro-budgeter, making life as smooth as possible for her family, all the while, not complaining. She enjoyed spending time with family, and always looked forward to the Shoemaker family gatherings. Beautiful inside, and out, she was fun, witty, and shared her infectious smile, right up until the end.

Margie was an incredible artist-painting stunning masterpieces, as well as drawings, and sketches, beginning in grade-school. She also enjoyed, and excelled at sewing, often sewing clothes for the kids, and matching doll outfits, cross-stich, puzzles, crossword puzzles, canning and flower gardening. In addition, Margie was a devoted Catholic, attending Mass at All Saints Catholic Church, weekly since she was a child, until she not well enough to drive. Then, she began “going to Mass” on EWTN. Saying the Rosary daily, she would often say an extra one for others in need of prayer. Prayer, and her faith, brought her great peace, throughout her life.

Margie is survived by her husband of 66 years, Monte Smith

Children: Timothy Smith (Wife Tamara), Christine Hillberg, Elizabeth Kaznakoff, Randy Smith, and Heidi Whipple (Husband Steven Whipple)

Grandchildren: Jaimie Hillberg, Robert Kaznakoff, Janice Hillberg, Crystal Carter, Amber Kaznakoff, Brady Smith, Anna Crocker, Noah Williams

Great Grandchildren: Kailani Tailua, Mekala Tailua, Mikey Tailua, Tristan Kaznakoff, Leila Hawk, Axel Kaznakoff, and Eliason Smith.

Preceded in death by her parents, and her 10 siblings.
