Staff Sergeant Eric Alan Hetland, U.S. Army (Ret.), 73, of Tacoma, Washington, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on August 11, 2026. He was a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, and friend, and his presence will be deeply missed.

Eric was an identical twin, born in DeKalb, Illinois, to Austin and Katherine Hetland. He was the “baby” of six children who grew up together on a dairy farm. Eric joined the Army as a young man and proudly served his country for more than 20 years. During his military career, he traveled with his family throughout the country and created many lasting memories along the way.

Eric loved to drive, which led him to his next career as a semi-truck driver for FedEx, where he worked until his retirement. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, bowling, and spending time with his family. He especially loved bowling and was in many leagues throughout the years. He shared this love with all of his children and enjoyed teaching them to bowl, creating memories they would carry with them for years to come. Eric had a great sense of humor and was always keeping everyone on their toes with his playful use of words and quick wit.

Eric is survived by his wife, Theresita ; his former wife, Carol, and their children, Kristina Dustan, Eric Hetland II, and Evelyn Hetland; his son, Matt Ragay; his grandchildren, Jaymes, Alyssa, Ryin, Sydney , Austin, Jayden, and Olive; and his three great-grandchildren.

He will be remembered for his dedication to his country, his love of family, his humor, and the many memories he created with those who knew and loved him.

Eric’s service honors will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. on September 8, 2026, immediately followed by his memorial service at 12:30 p.m. at Summer Cove Pavilion at American Lake.
